White Spruce plates / shallow bowls with Cordoban Red Aniline dye patterns. Insides of bowls finished with polymer finish to make it a very durable and food safe finish. The three to the top and right are 9 inches in diameter. The remainer of the plates illustrated are 12 inches in diameter and are finished in the same manner.

Spalting birch from Guardian Tree. Diameter 10.5 inches and 6 inches high. Colours are somewhat less intense than the vase above, but more distintive spalting patterns make this very special. Ref: Lean 8.

Vase with Cordoban Burst patterning. Wood is Spruce and the grain of the wood interacting with the cordoban dye application made for a really interesting pattern. 9 inch diameter by 8 inches high. Ref: Spruce Cordoban 1.
I was getting short of quality boxes and decided to make a few more. Shown here are a series in Black Walnut. Some feature the simple beauty of the Black Walnut wood grain, and others have been enhanced with the insertion of a red cedar, birch and walnut strip insert.

Left:"Resurrection Cross"  He is not here; he is risen as he said... Lk.   8 " X 12" X 1" cross depicting an empty space ... on the cross or an empty tomb.  Made from Friendly Forest Spruce wood, grain texture created by brushing out the softer  wood and highlighting the  hard grain.  It was then dyed with a brown analine dye, and polished with paste wax.  It comes in a special presentation gift bag with a card explaining the significance of the image. Left: Seven birch "Memory Boxes"; Outside Dimensions 4" high X 13.5 inches long and 9.5 inches deep. Lid and ends are contoured. The two ends have continuous grain pattern with the lid. Lid secured with full width hinge. Saskatchewan Birch wood finished with 4 coats of Varathane Wiping Varnish. Can be personalized on request.

Birch and Black Walnut Memory Box / Chest with frieze of aspen leaves encircling the box. 22 X 14 X 13.5 . Leather strapping and snap closures. Finished with Danish Oil and then surfaced with satin lacquer.

 

Birch bowls were turned when wood was green and on drying the bowls took on an oval shape. The interior is coated with poly resin to give it a very durable and food safe interior. Can be washed but should not be left in water. Approximately 10 inch diameter.

Tray

Birch with Wenge and Padauk ribbon insert. This box has three inside layers with two lift-out sliding trays. This unit is one of a series of four which differ in grain pattern. These are currently only finished with a sealer coat of polyurethane and can still have decorative images / names burned into the wood. The bottom layer will also be covered with a layer of jewellery box flocking. Ref: Padauk Ribbon Layer Box

Spalting Birch vase with African Wenge throat. This is one piece from a tree that I had called my "Guardian Tree." Dark browns tending to black and more subtle shadings of green and yellow make this a real beauty. Ref: Lean 7.

Although each image comes from the same  basic outline, they have taken on differences during the wood burning process.  I used a black and white photograph of Wolf to make these images.  Each seems to have taken on its own life in the images.

Left: I usually keep a limited selection of Cremation Urns in stock. They are a variety of woods and styles and can be customized as was the case with the one shown on the left. The uusual style is similar to this one and has a storage area under the top to place personal objects / mementos that people wish to keep with the ashes. Although I prefer advance orders with specific requirments, this is not always possible and is the reason I do keep some units in stock. However, that means slection is also limited.

Larger version of the birch bowl illustrated above.  Creating these colour effects requires  a combination of experience, luck and the application of the laws of physics, as well as a few strategic bursts of lacquer spray  at the right time in the right place. Ref. #:2379 CB

Saskatchewan is a land of plain and forest lands. The plains have been converted to farms and wheat is the iconic grain though its share of the ecnomy has been greatly reduced in favbour of other crops such as canola or lentils.

These are a series of boxes in birch wood with leaf / plant decoration burned into the  simple, blond wood.  I have used aniline dyes AFTER an initial sealer coat of Varathane.  When the wood is sealed the dyes, in a methyl hydrate solution, can be treated much as watercolour paints. Both Sold

Aspen, end-grain  trivets with aspen leaves burned into one surface.  Each trivet is approximately 6.5 inches in diameter.  They are sealed with polyurethane finish to make them water proof and stain resist.  Wipe with damp cloth to clean. (Ref # 2349 TR - 2357TR)
